Electronic Specifier announces the release of a new technical article: ‘The impact of AI within electronic design: a contextualised analysis of current and future AI application in electronic design.’
AI is one of, if not, the biggest buzzwords in technology today; it’s hard not to see the profound impact it is having across a number of industries. Whether it’s algorithms sorting through massive amounts of data, machine learning developing new chemical compounds, or just a generative AI helping you in your day-to-day activities, the impact of AI cannot be ignored. So, this beckons the question “Just how far will AI go?”
This is the question that I have applied to electronic design processes, where AI is seeing growing use and optimism. Will AI significantly impact electronic design as it has other industries?
Despite being in the early stages, AI’s role in electronic design is poised to make a significant impact soon, with many in the industry optimistic about its future.
The technical article will dive into key topics to answer the fundamental question: how is AI impacting the electronic design process?
The first part takes a look at some of the context, exploring the history of AI within the electronic design process in order to better understand the whole picture.
The second part then shifts into the present day, analysing where we are already seeing AI applications within the electronic design process, with insights from around the industry. A part of this analysis is a case study with CELUS, a company that is working to add AI to electronic design for the betterment of the industry.
The third part of the book will look at the challenges in the adoption of AI with electronic design, where its present downfalls are, what it must overcome to be accepted within the industry and how it must push against the established norms within the industry.
Finally, we will look ahead to what’s next for AI within the industry, where we might see it next, and what we can expect.
AI is here to stay, but how much it will integrate into our lives remains a question. This same principle applies not just to electronic design, but to all industries AI can have an impact. Will AI shift the electronic design industry forward, level out as a helpful tool, or fade into obscurity?
Big thanks to Dunstan Power, Director of ByteSnap Design, Tomide Adesanmi, Co-Founder & CEO of Circuit Mind, Tobias Pohl, Founder & CEO of CELUS, José Luís Ginjo, Success Engineer at CELUS, and Mahesh Rao, CEO at Aashaya Design Solutions, for their expert insights.

FAQ
- How is AI influencing electronics design?
AI is transforming electronics design by optimizing processes such as PCB layout and automating repetitive tasks in software development. However, the complete replacement of engineers by AI is still far off due to the complexities of translating abstract requirements into functioning electronics. Current AI applications in design focus more on enhancing efficiency rather than full automation.
- What is AIoT, and how does it relate to electronics?
AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things) refers to the integration of AI with IoT devices, creating intelligent systems capable of processing data at the Edge or in the Cloud. This integration allows for real-time data analysis and decision-making, improving operational efficiency and reducing latency in various applications, from industrial automation to smart homes.
- Are AI-enabled integrated circuits becoming more common?
Yes, AI-enabled integrated circuits are increasingly being adopted. Companies like Intel are incorporating AI cores into their CPUs, allowing devices to perform tasks like image recognition or autonomous driving with greater efficiency. This trend is expected to continue as the demand for smarter, more capable electronics grows.
